Do you want to learn my new game? It’s translation. You can learn a lot if you play this game. What variants are there? The first one is: translate it by yourself, then put it away. Second, look for a professional human translation. Consider it, compare it with your own one. Then take Google Translate or Deepl, or both, and compare all of them and assign points from 1 to 5 to them. Then give these four variants to friends with some English competence and let them guess what are human and which of the others belong to which translator. At the end, we make the crucial step: put the original text into ChatGPT and prompt it to translate it without any additional hint. You will get an excellent translation but you can improve it if you are ordering a translation which is close to the original, is keeping up with the flow of the original, transforming grammatical constructions in similar German ones. You can play with more or less famous translators or celebrated translations. You will find highly interesting differences and it’s funny to evaluate and rank them. Some of those examinations or estimations depend on your taste but most of them you can judge by accepted style rules and language usage as well. I think the best criterion is to compare the sound, the rhythm of the translation with the sound and rhythm of the original. Then you will find out the best translation with a convincing justification for this decision.
