A Meeting with Stephen King

If I may, I would like to tell you a story. This story happened to a friend of mine, not to me. He told it to me and I’ll try to repeat it as exactly as I am able to. I’ll let him speak.

“Some years ago, we — my wife and I and some other couples — had a really exciting meeting with the famous novelist Stephen King. I think you know Stephen King and perhaps you have read some of his mysterious stories. We were speaking with Stephen about his life as a writer, about his way of creating his amazing and shocking stories. He gave us some creepy examples. We laughed about them, about his ideas, and his suddenly coming to a fantastic conclusion.

Our host asked at the end of the meeting if he — Stephen — would be so kind as to tell us a story that would really shock us, making us experience what his protagonists in his books go through. But he answered: ‘That is seriously not possible. Look at your guests — all of them in a very good mood. They are relaxed, have had a lot of fun. Everything I could tell them would make them laugh, not fear. Anxiety would be far from them. They will walk to their cars, drive home, talk about the nice evening, and decide to have a glass of wine. They will drink their wine, go up to their bedroom, take off their clothes, and lay down in bed. …..

And he is already there.”
