Fluently writing about music cannot be simple, because it’s not simple in German either. Neither do I have suitable vocabulary for it, nor a well-founded knowledge of music at all. Today we have again a concert evening with Joana Malwitz as conductor and Igor Levit as pianist. I think it’s the first time that I will hear him live. Besides a symphony by Haydn, the other two parts of the program are heavy fare. There is a concerto for piano and orchestra by Béla Bartok. In preparation for it, I was listening to a YouTube recording. The first two movements were very hard. The last one too, but refreshingly powerful. So I think the applause will be enthusiastic afterwards. After a pause, Stravinsky’s Petrushka follows. It’s a little more comfortable for my ear. Unfortunately, Ulrike feels a bit sick and I will be accompanied by my grandchild, Lea. I’m highly interested in how she will take it in. Often I’ve found that the younger generation is much more inclined to accept such slighly stranger music without melody and often enough dissonant than the older one. I will report how Lea will have been impressed or not.
